Our Work

The Poole Quays Forum will eventually be a main point of contact for Developers and Poole Council as plans for the area develops and planning applications are submitted. There is a lot going on in the area. But we could also be involved in other work such as events, place marketing, street management, and neighbourhood watch and community projects. If funding can be found we could commission public realm improvements, provide new open spaces or write a Neighbourhood Plan dictating precisely what buildings and uses we do and don’t want to see in the area.

The Neighbourhood Plan

The plan has six themes that are set out in twelve policies.

Design, Open Space and the Public Realm

There are not many open spaces in the area, so we want to make better use and for them to be rejuvenated, especially areas such as Hunger Hill, Hamworthy Recreation Ground and Harbourside path.  These policies seek to ensure all new buildings, streets and spaces are designed to a high quality and all parks are enhanced.  We want more street trees, existing ones to be retained and historic materials and heritage assets to be preserved and enhanced.

Movement and Place

We want to make it easier for people to walk to the shops, leisure and services by creating 'people-friendly' streets.  We want the Poole town centre road network to be improved, with more cycle paths and bus stops and we want the streets to feel safe, with better crossing, lighting and landscaping.  We want Poole to be more 'sustainable'.
Policies PQF4 & PQF5

Hamworthy Centre

Hamworthy Centre is at the heart of the residential community.  We want there to be more shops and community facilities there.  Environmental enhancements are needed to make the area more attractive to shoppers, residents and investors.
Policies PQF6 & PQF7

Poole High Street

Our policies promote improvements to the design and landscaping of the High Street, which will complement the existing street market, especially and interchanges and crossroads.  Proposals should enhance the character of the conservation area.  We want the use, function and design of the High Street also to be examined and consideration given to reintroducing cars on some sections of the High Street in the evenings.  A more diverse range of uses is needed to create more activity during winter months as well as at night and weekends.
Policies PQF8 & PQF9

Poole Quay

The policies support the creation of a high quality vibrant visitor destination and local amenity space, through the creation and implementation of a master plan, which will enhance the quality of the public realm and include a shared surface and only timed vehicular access.  Policies also support small-scale independent businesses and new facilities linked to sailing, maritime and ceramic industries, whilst preserving heritage assets and views of Brownsea Island and Poole Harbour.

Partnership Working

We want to work in partnership with all the agencies responsible for the area, in particular the local planning authority and we want to create master plans for all the open spaces in the area.  The Forum wants to be involved in pre-application discussions with the planning authority and developers as well as the drafting of planning obligations.  Infrastructure projects using the Forum's proportion of Community Infrastructure Levy must be prioritised in accordance with the neighbourhood plan and the community's wishes.
